About VivaMed Access
The barrier
Good health information is often locked behind four walls: it is only in English, it needs sound or good eyesight, it needs fast internet, and it is buried in jargon. Short-video health content is also where myths spread fastest.
What this does
- Language: every Short has a full transcript in English, Italian and Hindi.
- Ability: captions are burned into every video, there is an audio-only version, and every page works with a keyboard and screen reader (semantic headings, skip link, visible focus, high contrast, dark mode, resizable text, no motion).
- Connectivity and cost: the video is re-encoded to about 1-2 MB and nothing loads until you press play; the transcript works with no video at all.
- Trust: each claim links to the real PubMed study behind it.
What is new in this hackathon and what already existed
Existing before the event: VivaMed's script pipeline (PubMed-grounded scripts, fact-check, rendering). Built for AccessED Hacks: the multilingual transcripts, the low-data and audio-only encodes, and this accessible website.
AI assistance (disclosure)
Scripts are drafted by AI models from real PubMed abstracts and then fact-checked and approved before rendering. Italian and Hindi transcripts are machine-assisted translations. The site was built with AI coding assistance. Limits: the translations have not been clinically reviewed, videos are narrated in English only, and this is education, not medical advice.
